In a significant step towards improving workplace ergonomics, IKEA has introduced over 400 exoskeletons in 14 countries. The innovative devices, developed by Ottobock, a German manufacturer of prosthetics, reduce the physical strain on employees during strenuous and repetitive physical activities in logistics and warehouse work. Biomechanical energy distribution redirects forces within the body. Kinetic energy is absorbed during movement, stored and released again as required to support stressed areas of the body.
IKEA and its employees have already noticed numerous benefits: Muscles and joints are less strained when lifting and carrying, making work feel less strenuous. Sensory measurements show that the posture of users is noticeably improved, particularly by stabilizing the back and protecting the spine. In addition, the exoskeletons not only protect the health of employees, but also contribute to a more inclusive working environment by making activities more accessible to a wider range of workers. The use of exoskeletons will be extended to other countries such as India, the Netherlands and Japan in the future.
